Latvia Signed Agreement of Participation in EXPO-2017 03.09.2016

On September 2-3, 2016 Commissioner of the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO-2017 Rapil Zhoshybayev visited the Republic of Latvia. During the visit, he held meetings with Minister of Transport of Latvia Uldis Augulis, Chairman of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Janis Endziņ, who is the National Sector Commissioner responsible for the country’s participation in EXPO-2017, as well as the representatives of Latvian business circles and mass media.

During the bilateral meetings, R. Zhoshybayev and J. Endziņ discussed the status and prospects of bilateral cooperation between the countries, conditions of participation of the Latvian Government and local companies in the field of green technologies in “EXPO-2017”.

In the context of the exhibition’s theme in Astana, J. Endziņ said that Latvia is striving to become the “greenest” country in the world by 2020.

The share of renewable energy in Latvia’s final energy consumption reached 37.1%, which is the second highest level in the European Union after Sweden (52.1%). 755 million euros has been given to Latvia in the framework of EU objectives in the fight against climate change.

The Latvian side noted the advantages of the country’s geographical location as well as the promising projects of the Latvian enterprises in “green” energy field. In this regard, the Latvian pavilion will be called “Meeting Point Latvia – Energy is in our Nature”.

According to Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Latvia is not a member of the International Exhibitions Bureau and participated in EXPO exhibitions only a few times. Confirmation of participation in “Astana EXPO-2017” exhibition demonstrates a very high interest and special friendship of Latvia towards Kazakhstan. Latvia is one of the first countries to support the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to establish the partnership program “Green Bridge” by signing the Charter of this program.

At the end of the meeting, R. Zhoshybayev and J. Endziņ signed the agreement on Latvia’s participation in “EXPO-2017”.
